ARTIST BIO and STATEMENT



I was raised and educated in the Midwest where the flat and unobtrusive landscape was the most prevalent aspect of the environment. My paintings reveal the conflict and harmony that exist in the relationship between Earth and sky, when the sun touches the tops of the cornfield at dusk and the day is over but the work is not.



My work describes this life in its simplest form and gives the viewer a peek into nature's organization. Midwesterners control the environment to a certain extent by dividing the land into mile-wide squares, laid out like an old quilt top. They compartmentalize the fields by color and fence, and create towns that have only square city blocks which affects the way they approach every aspect of life. I've lived near Florida's blue waters and clean beaches, Michigan's evergreens, and experienced the mystery of the Mississippi River. The landscapes reflect my systematic approach to structure and even require the trees to stand at attention.



My medium is the oil paintstick. The oil paintstick can be blended very smooth or can be applied with more pressure to leave a heavy texture, much like the use of a palette knife. The paintings reflect the colors of nature as well as purple trees and crimson rivers that live only in my sketchbook. Oilbars are a professional quality bar paint made by artists for artists. With a rich, buttery working consistency, drying time is between 2 to 5 days, providing an opportunity to rework surfaces. Oilbars are compatible with conventional tube paints as well as alkyds, gels, varnishes and thinners, and may be applied to a variety of surfaces. They consist of pure pigment, refined oils and waxes. Available in a variety of brilliant colors plus a colorless blender, in 3 sizes - slim, original and stump - to accommodate a variety of painting styles. The original is twice the size of a conventional paintstick, the slim is 1/3 the size of the original, and the stump is three times the size of the original.
