Sylvie Chadourne

About the Artist

Within the framework of Visual and Plastic arts, SYL directs her steps to a constant experimentation of various techniques, combining Photography, Painting, Drawing and Digital medium tending towards specific syntheses of various fields.

She gives different names to her artworks: she calls her painting and drawing style “Romantic Surrealism”, her Nature and research photographs respectively “Contemplative Photography” and “Experimental Photography”.

Her goal is to create pictures with meanings, still images that would “talk” to our souls. She digs deep inside her instinctive character to communicate with images like a poet would with words.
Aesthetic takes an important place in her work. The artist thinks that beauty is an essential condiment to a sane and spicy live! SYL is a Nature lover. She always tried to spend time in Nature, she likes to hike and ride her bike with her friend to the wild parts. Nature has been a constant source of inspiration to her.

As a photographer, she uses her ability to see the apparently simple details of our world, that she turns into visual wonders. Through her artwork, she hopes to give around good feelings, to surprise our eyes with new kind of pictures, to transmit her love of Nature and, finally remind us not to forget about the miracle we’re living in!

Cats

1998
Pastel
50 x 65 cm

Cats... always have an important place in my life! so, that's my tribute to them, to their fascinating beauty, agility and elegance, their mysterious power of seduction.

Clairvoyance

1998
Charcoal and Pastels on paper
50 x 65 cm

Beside the content, my original idea was to give the impression that something is happening, to put movement in a still picture. Regarding the technical aspect: I used Carbon pencil (by Conté) which is charcoal mixed with oil, and white pastel for the high lights.

Le jongleur

1995
Charcoal and Pastels on paper
50 x 65 cm

Life is a question of balance !!

The Black Queen

1997
Charcoal and Sepia on paper
65 x 50 cm

Sometimes my brain feels like this chess game ... impossible to play it! The pictures I create must mean something to me, but I also need to experiment the technical aspect of it: in that case it was the use of different kind of medium (charcoal, sepia and carbon pencil) and the render of the transparency of the main subject.

Duality

1994
Oil on canvas
60 x 90 cm

This oil painting is a tribute to Ricmeric, my best friend and art teacher. The design is build on the central axis of the painting, the "duality" theme is also one of Ric's favourite. The whole idea is around Duality (like the title says) and complementary. The opposites meet and try to reach each other. The silhouette at the centre is doubled, creating the X and Y shapes: the 2 chromosomal specifications of the human gender. There a body of a naked woman sleeping under the blossomed tree: she might be the one dreaming about all this...

Symphony

1995
Oil on canvas
60 x 90 cm

This is one of my favourite oil paintings I've carried out. The dancers are based on Bayard Osborn sculptur, an american artist who lives on the Costa del Sol (Spain) and also a great friend of mine.

Rencontre Primaire

2005
130 x 97 cm

Rencontre Primaire means "Primary Encounter". It's illustrating on a surreal way the encounter between the earth and the sky. It's also about duality, the main principle of live. This is the first painting I pre-drew on computer. I've used Acrylic paint for the first coats and Oil for the final one. I wanted it to look like a "normal" painting at first sight, and then to be deciphered. I really enjoyed painting this desert landscape, though it was quite difficult to reach this clean render because of the bright colours joining dark one! The poppies symbolize the result of this encounter. There are also there to bring happiness and fantasy to the picture.

Baby's Dream

1996
50 x 65 cm

Charcoal and Pastel drawing on paper. Imagining what babies dream about... just for fun!

Psychedelic candles

1997
30 x 40 cm

Limited edition (300) on photo paper hand signed and numbered by the artist: reflex photograph (color slide) NOT manipulated on computer. This photo is part of my Experimental period: research on light and reflexion. I have used an optic filter on the lens of the camera to produce the "radiations" around the flames of the candles. I've set up a special background for the light to reflect and create the sparkling stars.

Oh Woman

1995
30 x 40 cm

Limited edition (300) on photo paper hand signed and numbered by the artist: color slide photograph NOT manipulated on computerThis picture is part of my "photographism" vintage. It's one of my attempt to combine my drawing skills with my photos. It has been conceived using a photographic "technique". joining 2 slides in a frame.

Tulips and snow

2001
30 x 40 cm

Limited edition (300) on photo paper hand signed and numbered by the artist.

Mountain River

1994
30 x 40 cm

Limited edition (300) on photo paper hand signed and numbered by the artist: color slide photograph. This mountain river is called "Le Loup" (the wolf). I spent part of my childhood by this amazing place, les "Gorges du Loup" in south of France, close to St Paul de Vence. I'd planned a small expedition there to take photos of this beautiful place surrounding by high cliffs, but I came too late and the sun was already gone over the peaks, making the coloured cliffs shined and reflected on the water!

Past and Present distorsion

1997
30 x 40 cm

Limited edition (300) on photo paper hand signed and numbered by the artist: color slide photograph. This photo is one of a kind! I've shot this one in the city of Nice (Avenue Jean Médecin), on the Riviera in France. There are no tricks, no filters. The "Basilique Notre Dame de Nice" is reflecting itself on the glass building just in front of it. At the time I took this picture, I have created a traffic jam as almost each driver would stop, look and, of course comment what I was shooting at!

Autumn Leaves

2000
30 x 40 cm

Limited edition (300) on photo paper hand signed and numbered by the artist: color slide photograph. The wonderful colours are the originals one, I used no filter. The shot was taken in the mountains back to the Cote d'azur in south of France.

Frosen Leaves

1998
30 x 40 cm

Limited edition (300) on photo paper hand signed and numbered by the artist: color slide photograph. The wonderful colours are the originals one, I used no filter. The shot of this early frost was taken at the shade during a beautiful morning of October in the north of Europe.

Lake

2002
30 x 40 cm

Limited edition (300) on photo paper hand signed and numbered by the artist: color slide photograph.

The black hole

1998
30 x 40 cm

1998
30 x 40 cm

The Violinist

2007
86 x 105 cm

Limited Edition (1000) of Giclée printing hand signed and numbered by the artist. This picture is part of my last digital work, a vintage named Perfect World. I've used digital photos I've taken in commercial centers and then I've played and painted them using software such as Photoshop and a Wacom pen (graphic tablette). My idea was to produce a kind of photorealistic pictures never seen before, introducing mannequins as if there were real persons. The music instruments theme came later. I didn't want to use any computer filters or distorsion of shapes and colors, I only wanted to use opacity and transparency effects in order to create visual depth.

Heart Beat

2007
