Tamar Frank

About the Artist

I work with daylight/ artificial light within spaces and environments. Here I react to existing elements that are specific to the actual location. By shifting concentrations to a new focus I try allow the viewer to discover the process of visual conception. The approach in my work is minimal and borders the immaterial. There is always a reference to defining what we think we see and what we actually see and I aim to recurrently conjure up this experience. Light is the essence of our visual world and the ultimate medium to work with.

Langhuis

2006
nylon thread, black light
500x600x800

For this solo exhibititon three lightinstallations were created in Galerie Het Langhuis an artinitiative in Zwolle Holland situated in a 17th centuary building. The unique construction of this space is specifically defined by the crooked walls and floors. The extremity of this being off scale and balance somehow seems a balance within itself. In this one can imagined how invisible lines could hold it all together. These were thus translated in lines of light reflecting the space like a mirror image.

Theater de Lampegiet

2005
steel, plexiglass, foils, fluorescent lamps
7 times 300x35

Theater de Lampegiet
This a permanent artwork created in collaboration with Huibers&Jarring Architects in front of the Theatre in Veenendaal Holland. The 7 pillars mark the front of the building and also create a path from the parkinglot towards the entrance. The work is an abstraction which refers to local folklore during the Lampegiet Festival. To commemorate the lighting of the oil lamps in the factories during autumn people parade with colourful lantarns.

Underground

2004
phosphorescent pigment, rubber latex, light program
280x65x1400

Underground
This was an installation created in an underground former explosives cellar of a fortress. The narrow corridors were covered with phophorescent pigment. Viewers were led trough these corridors by lights that went on off as soon as the dorridors were approached leaving the afterglow of the pigment.

Light Arch

2006
fluorescent tube lights. foils
650x300

Light installation in old church as part of the Open stal art route in oldeberkoop Holland

Spatial Transition

2005
phosphrescent pigment, light program, sound
360x4000

Spatial Transition
This installation was made for the Adiotoop project in Art Initiative Extrapool Nijmegen. The wall-view changed through a light program: first filling the room with blue light, then activating a stroboscobe repeatedly flashing and ending with darkeness leaving only the afterglow as seen in this picture. The light shifts were accompanied by sound made by sound artist Marten de Wind.

Mother and Daughter

2004
laser, lightfoils, lightprogram
distance 2000

Mother and Daughter
This was for a temporary project on location 'Belicht Heimwee' (lit up longing)in Haarlem Holland. The large domed penitentiary and the small domed bridge watcher's house were connected by a green laser. A light program made the small dome pulsate gently. Alternately the tip of the large dome would react by flickering thus visualizing a communication between the two buildings.
