| About the Artist |
I began to paint after spending many years as a studio potter. I have struggled with art in relation to myself and painting subject matter, inspiration, my style, direction ... and it is only recently things have come into focus for me, and now I can paint seriously.
The Chinese writer Kuo Jo-hsi wrote in Sung Dynasty times "The brush must be nimble move swiftly in a continuous and connecting manner so that the flow of life is not interrupted as the thoughts precede the brush. But the brush is also in the thoughts and when the picture is finished all the thoughts are there and the image corresponds completely to the spirit." |

| Right now I'm working on a series of very large acrylic paintings of the human figure in the landscape. The figure is one with the landscape and yet separate, surrounded and yet removed. In these paintings I am attempting to depict a sympathetic harmony between the figure and landscape through color and form and light. The landscape will mirror the emotions of the figure. I want to make the viewer feel these figures the weight of them, their presence, their emotions, their vitality, how they interact with their surroundings. I am excited about these paintings because already I see these figures in my mind's eye and I feel a strong attachment to them. |
