Vanessa Hodgkinson

Born in London 1982, studied History of Art at Emmanuel College, Cambridge University before moving to Kuwait to study Arabic and paint. Spent time in the Middle East including Iran, Iraq, Oman, Saudi Arabia and Turkey.
|

About the Artist
Working with the aesthetic boundaries that have emerged from 'Islamic art', Hodgkinson makes work that engages in finding a space between the ongoing tradition of geometry as used in architecture and art, and investigations of a more human dimension.
These concerns meet and take form in paintings on diverse sufaces including ceramics and paper. At first glance these images seem to be non-representational configurations of colours within larger grid systems.
However, on closer inspection they appear to have their origin in observations that remain mysterious to the viewer, suspending expectation somewhere between enigma and an intuitive understanding of what is presented before us.
