Education and biography
Ryan obtained a post graduate diploma in Art Therapy from the Edinburgh University Settlement School Of Art Therapy in 1995. Since 1982 Ryan lived in Italy, Egypt, Brazil, Ex-Yugoslavia and Scotland and Ghana, collaborating and exhibiting with artists in all these countries. In the past Ryan's work has been concerned with issues such as dispossession, exile and homelessness, which she linked to her own peripatetic career and life of travel, and to the need for a spiritual and psychological 'place' within everyone of us. These issues, constant in her art-making became overt during the years from 1990 to late 1993 when she lived in Belgrade and witnessed the breakup of the former Yugoslavia. Between 1996 and 1998, after moving to Italy, she also taught workshops with Italian and foreign students in the Umbria region and collaborated, also on a curatorial level, on a number of exhibitions such as 'Trevi Occhio Giovane' (97) at the Flash Art Museum and ‘Viaggatori Sulla Flaminia' (98). Works later completed in Italy included the photographic/collage series 'Cancelli Walks' (97) where images of a young boy carrying flowers hint at quattrocento angels. The boy is her own son and the flowers were collected in the remote hamlet of Cancelli, regarded by many local people as a sacred site. The idea of walking is intrinsic to this piece as it is to the various shoe installations for which she has become known. For the exhibition 'Travellers Along The Flaminia' in the summer of 1998 Ryan created an installation entitled ‘One Hundred Steps' consisting of one hundred pairs of shoes donated by the people of Trevi, a hill-town in Umbria where she lives. Each contributor was asked to write the story of his/her shoes, thus creating a collective poem which was also an exercise in contemporary anthropology. After this, photos of the shoes were hand-manipulated, exhibited separately and a series of ‘livre d'artiste' were created using both the words and images from the installation. In 2000, the association Orfini Nurmesister and the Umbria region, in collaboration with the artist, produced a bilingual English-Italian catalogue of photos and text of this project. The shoe, transitional object par excellence, is repeated in other works, such as the terracotta series produced in late 1998, entitled 'Child Soldiers'. In these Ryan re-appropriates the once-fired white baby shoes from the ceramic workshops in the Italian town of Deruta (used to hold confetti at baptisms) and transforms them into the remains of imaginary infant warriors. In Ryan's world fragility becomes a symbol of resistance, in opposition to the arrogance of power. Ryan uses a variety of techniques in her art - from drawing, acrylic painting on wood to terracotta, photography and sound installations etc. She has collaborated with musicians and composers such as Prof. Nigel Osborne at the University of Edinburgh (93), and Italian actors Pino Grossi and Graziano Sirci to create time-based works which occur alongside her sculptural or pictorial works. In the year 1998 Virginia Ryan began a large new body of work based on the female figure, the first part of it being shown in 2000, in the international exhibition 'Autoredonna' in Livorno (invited to represent Australia) and later in the year under the heading 'Woman looking at Woman’ at the Galleria Miralli in Viterbo, Italy. She collaborated with Berlin based artist Niels Betori on a video piece 'Richiamo' and in late 2000 completed, in collaboration with Tim Ryan at Trackdown studios in Sydney, Australia, a video sequence entitled 'Undermasks'
In September 2000 'Where the Cypress Rises-An Australian artist in Umbria' based on her experience of living in Italy was published by Lothian press, Australia (www.amazon.com).

WORKS FROM AFRICA:
In 2001 Ryan began writing a sequel telling of encounters and contemporary life in Accra, Ghana, which was published as a series of short stories entitled ‘Strangers in Accra’ by Afram Press, in Ghana, in 2004.
In the same year, a visual installation, a collaborative body of 100 pieces of work executed with the sign-writers of Accra, Ghana, entitled ‘Landing in Accra’ was first exhibited at the National Museum of Accra. Speakers included Dr Achille Bonito Oliva and Ghanaian poet and intellectual Dr Abena P. A. Busia. In January 2002 Ryan curated the first outdoor exhibition ‘Art In the Garden' with leading Ghanaian and Togolese sculptors at the Italian Embassy residence in Ghana - a successful attempt to bring together more experimental art than could at the time be found in the city's galleries, and the lush tropical vegetation of West Africa, which has now been repeated throughout the city and has become one f the most popular recurrent art events. In September 2002 she jointly curated, with Enrico Mascelloni, the exhibition of Ghanaian Artists entitled 'Almighty God and the Apostles of Accra' at the Rocca di Umbertide centre for Contemporary Art in Central Italy, and in 2003 'Escape and Memory' at the Chamber of Deputies in Rome, in collaboration with UNHCR.

A series of Installations and paintings concerned with the illusive seductiveness of Gold and the ecology of the West African coastline, once called the Gold Coast, entitled ‘Seven Steps from Anomabo’ was completed in May 2004 and first exhibited at the Dubois Centre in Accra.

In Italy, June 2004, she participated in the exhibition Vanitas curated by Achille Bonito Oliva the Certosa of Padula in Italy, with a series of portraits of Ghanaian men entitled ‘Living Gold’. Other major projects in 2004 included, in collaboration with the Ippogrifo Azzuro Association in Milan, an exhibition and archive of childrens drawings entitled ‘Wide Open_ Ghana through Children’s Eyes’ , co-curated with Luigia Versolatti.
Ryan has completed a work-in-progress entitled ‘Exposures- A White Woman in Africa’, a photographic series exploring aspects of neo-colonialism in which uses autobiographical visual representations, her own life as a white woman in Africa, as the subject matter. The photo essay and text (written by reknown anthropolgist Steve Feld), were published in the biennial journal of Social Science ‘Voci’ of the Sapienze University in Rome, in Autumn 2006, followed by a special lecture by Feld in the Anthropology Department of Harvard University in October 2006. There have been a number of exhibitions and symposia in Africa, Italy and USA , the last one in November 2007 at the Peck School of Art in Wisconsin. For catalogue please see www.voxlox.net .

She has been working on ‘The Castaways Project’, a ‘multisensorial installation’ concerned with memory and environmental data from the coastline of West Africa, once point of departure for the slave trade. In collaboration with American sound artist Steven Feld a documentary film was produced on the project, entitled ‘Were water meets Land’. Feld also produced a documentary sound environment to accompany the visual installation, an hour long c.d. entitled ‘Anomabo Shoreline'( also available online at www.voxlox.net).
The first major show of this multi-sensorial installation was in the Whitworth Museum in the city of Manchester.

Recent Italian projects include INTRAMOENIA EXTRA ARTE in Puglia, with Achille Bonito Oliva.
Here Ryan collaborated with female embroiderers from the south of Italy. Results can be seen on her website and at the Eclettica_cultura dell’arte website.
