| About the Artist |
Artist Statement
My work calls attention to the actions, beliefs and choices of our culture—often using humor and irony as methods of expression. It is both a wake up call, and a reminder to enjoy the things that really matter in our lives.
Paint, screen prints, collage, stencil and mixed media are layered into montages to create edgy contemporary art, some of which is graffiti-style art with a punk rock attitude.
Perceptions of American culture, family, politics, conflict and religion are explored using symbolic hyperbole, for example, flowers shooting out of a gun. Some work incorporates visual tricks, like the message “Godless America” written above an image of the Virgin Mary—a play-on-words with the word “Goddess,” and the phrase “God Bless America.”
“I Could Just Kill Myself,” the title given to a street-art style portrait of Christ, is a tongue-in-cheek characterization of fulfilling one’s destiny, while “Freedom Fighter,” a stencil that portrays property defacement, challenges religious hypocrisy.
