Sharon Baker

About the Artist

Sharon’s work draws on imagery from graphic art and popular culture: typefaces, adverts, posters, photography and films. These influences are revealed in her rendering of images in pictorial space, often in a flattened two dimensional format. Found images are starting points for pieces that explore trace and memory. Her work manipulates the original subject matter: images are altered and repeated in visual patterns. Gestures and motifs are selected and shifted from their original context to invite new meanings.

Her creative processes include printmaking, photography, painting, drawing and collage. She uses prints as source material for collages and as elements in paintings. A signature device is the use of tessellation: repeating images within a piece for increased visual impact often using a limited colour palette. The aesthetics of mark making are important along with creating a rhythm and balance through the motifs selected and the colours used. She experiments with incorporating different materials and decoration such as fabrics, wallpapers and beads to explore how textures can influence the reading of her work.
