| About the Artist |
Bailey grew up in Southern Ohio(b.1939) in a farming community defined geographic-
ally by the end-moraines of
the last glaciation. Culturally, the community was
defined by the Underground Railroad, which the Quaker sect used to sumggle slaves to Canada by way of the Beaver and Erie Canals.
Her Grandfather, Harry Waddell, was a gentlemen farmer interested in cultural history of the area and traveled to the Southwest U.S. collecting Indian artifacts for an extensive collection of crafts.
Having learned to draw at an
early age; the artist, at age ten, began teaching arts & crafts to "little kids" in summer classes.
The influence of the work of Charles Burchfield was significant in her years at Salem High School. A famous watercolor painting, The Three Trees, was studied in the Salem Public Library and art students in the High School worked outdoors, often frequenting, the places the older watercolorist had painted (1911 graduate of the same high school). This experience was a primary influence on Bailey, who continued to paint outdoors as a Plein Air artist in her future work.
