Remembrance
2007 75cm x 62cm
This piece spoke to me of troubled soil torn through conflict. The colour red sweeps through this semi-abstract landscape and is connected to the title of the piece. I also had in mind, my period in the MOD when I would talk to a certain officer out in ‘theatre’ and he would describe the desolate land and atmosphere during the aftermath of war. Some people have seen wrecked vehicles in this piece which I did not see myself. However, I also see the piece as pointing to what is beautiful and containing the possibility of healing/reconciliation/peace.
Impermanence
2007 67cm x 57cm
This piece is about the transience of an encounter with beauty; visiting beauty. This is an abstract piece, however, out of the swirling forms emerged the faint outline of a figure; a passing figure. The figure reminded me of the Whirling Dervishes I had recently seen at the Brooke Theatre; their motion (being circular) speaks of the eternal, yet through the time bound movements of the dance ritual.
Open Book
2008 84cm x 36cm
I declined an invitation to read a portion of my diary at an event. However, contemplation of the idea produced this painting.
