About the Artist

In this series, I used images I didn’t create: I stole them from Calvin Klein
who had them made by an art director and photographer. I present them
through a fake painting virtuosity: they were created by a computer
generated paint-by-numbers technique. So where is the artist?

Susan Sontag’s idea that this media interplay is “the tactic intelectuals
employ to sanction their enjoyment of mass culture” is taken to a
different dimension by the fact of my using non-judgemental replicas
which evokes an absence of moral values into the experience of
viewing the painting. So where is the meaning?

There is a parallel between this work’s “trompe l’oeil” and the illusions
of the ad itself where models pretend to be in a moment of romance, sex
and sensuality, playing with the viewer’s desire leading him or her into buying.
What you see is not what you see many times over. The reflective layers of the
process “photograph, scan, vector effect of the photograph, computer
file, printed outlines, oil painted image on the canvas” all bring different
meaning to each viewer’s own bubble of consciousness.
So where is the art?

The illusion that makes up all the reality we know is the same prime
matter we play with hoping to attain whatever unspeakable
intractable truth there may or may not be.
