John Rocheleau

About the Artist

Painting takes me deep into the bones of nature. I paint because I want to be immersed in life's beauty and power. The paintings are my means of discovery and expression. Every painting is motivated by those drives. I believe that when we paint, we communicate a little of the magic of nature, and I believe that nature resides in our hearts—it is never far away.

I want to paint the spirit of things, and the emotions that I have. I use whatever technique and color that allows me to most directly explore and express what I am painting. I am in awe of nature and everything about life. The same motivations are at work in my sculpture, though these are more visceral, human oriented expressions.

Breaking Free

2003
74 x 61 x 14 cm's

Common apple wood, copper, and cement materials were used for this piece, to represent nature in its raw form. That nature, is our own biological imperative that writhes against the restraints, that society and the definitions we hold about ourselves impose upon us. The piece illustrates the inhibitions we have, and promises to somehow break free of them.

Potential

2003
20 x 20 x 14 cm's

An abstract organic form expressing power in potential. A quiet but sensual power that resonates from the core of our being. A power that we are often uncomfortable with. A power that drives our creativity and relationships.

When I Awake

2003
11.5 x 42.5 x 21.5 cm's

Beauty and power in repose; loosely confined and easily awakened. The roughness and rawness of nature is combined with grace and strength. It quietly awaits the dawn.

Education and biography
I am entirely self-taught.
