Julie Umerle paints in series that are often open ended. The paintings are organic: they crack, drip and split. Layers of paint are built up slowly, making use of gravity and an element of chance. Their dynamics reveal opposition and interplay between the vertical and the horizontal. Her paintings address issues of freedom and control in handling of paint and medium, yet reveal intervention and constant decision making on the part of the artist. The paintings are also about perception and call attention to the surface.
