| About the Artist |
There are various ways to follow what’s happening in the world: watching TV, leafing through the papers, clicking through the infinite pages posted on the Web. Wherever she finds herself, Elena Nemkova chooses to connect to a news page Newsru.com, to find out what’s going on in Russia, as well as other countries. Sometimes it’s as though she’s reduced her gaze to the limited geography of an inhabitant cloistered within the confines of her own country, when, in fact, searching for an expansion that is all her own, she went beyond it, crossed the frontier, while remaining snagged on it. The accumulation of news (and therefore of events and subsequently memories, of more or less relevance) has given rise to a series of archived records, through which it is to situate her personal microcosm. It is a collection in constant growth, whose vastness of content and subjects could provoke panic or terror, but also become a fertile terrain for the imagination. Thus, some news headlines might obsess the artist up to the moment in which she feels constrained top transform them into drawings. There where the effects of our times are held in custody: scientific invention, victims and heroes, technological discoveries, myths, basic data. The artists uses all of this material to compose her world – a landscape assembled in a purchased site. |
