Carme Sanglas

About the Artist

The artist’s work consists of paintings on paper, wood or lead, using the technique of overlaying matte textures with some parts in gold leaf. Gold that has the quality of light incorporated into the picture and at the same time, has its own symbolic value.

Her compositions uses figurative subjects, including figures and objects that, taken out of their normal context or appearance, take on a new form. It is possible to read a descriptive meaning into them in various ways. The images describe themselves or have a certain coherent internal syntax, which is luminous and spatial. At the same time they exist in a strange light that isn’t quite real.

The colors are equidistant between light and darkness, it’s not possible to tell whether it’s dusk or dawn, at times very murky, and at others clearer, but always in stark contrast to the brilliance of the gold. Sometimes the object represented takes on and appears as a distinctive form, or it acquires volume, such as the sheets of lead worked in relief.

Not infrequently, fire is represented (being a process of transformation) and also paths (that imply movement), running water, or simple actions (dawn, a smile or a breath). They add to the dramatic theme of increasing and decreasing light and darkness. One can interpret the images as an allusion to time, as if they were trying to represent or at least suggest it. Sometimes counterposing objects are used, for their own pure presence, and what is said about time.

It is a language that draws information from many sources but that is moving inward. Although appearing similar to that of previous works, with little obvious change, each image evolves into unforseen solutions, discoveries with new meanings, new explanations - and many more questions.

Carme Sanglas has also illustrated periodicals, books and posters. She also enjoys deicatijng part of her time to giving art classes to children in her workshop.

Alimares (Beacons)

2005
36 x 45 cm

Alimares were the bonfires that in past times were lit in high and visible places to communicate from far away or celebrate important events. Under a red sky that colours the composition, we see three bonfires of gold on the peaks of cliffs that rise up out of a sea of black water. In the middle, a still boat. It is a small format with only three colors but it evokes a much more extensive space.

Galvany

2005
92 x 54 cm

Against a background of red dusky light a person, reduced to just a black silhouette stripped of any reference, is crying. This piece is part of a series of figures standing in different poses. Each has the name of a hero from diverse mythologies, distant in geography and time... but notwithstanding, they are all intimately connected.

Llibre del capvespre (The Book

2004
50 x 73 cm

A misty evening sky above the golden sea, where some small black islands float. At the same time they are pages of an open book.

Esplendor del sol (The splendo

2004
21 x 33 x 2 cm

Worked in relief on lead, a sun-belly is embraced and caressed by the black hands of the small black figure that is simply painted on the lead.

Elogi de la matèria (In praise

2004
60 x 71 cm

Emerging from an imprecise magma of paint the color of murky water or what in Catalan would be described as “ the color of a fleeing dog” Five hillocks or promontories rise up and form successive entities: paint, bronze powder, silver and gold leaf, rising up towards the light.

Espill (Mirror)

2004
64 x 60 cm

A dark figure faces the round mirror that she is holding. The mirror appears to be facing us like a full moon with the figure standing before it.

Parar la fosca (Embracing dark

2000
40 x 40 cm

Legs sunk in blue continuum (water, magma, paint?), the figure with arms slightly exaggerated, spreads out a net of gold or light "to embrace the darkness".

Mixed media and gold leaf on p

2000
40 x 40 cm

Against the light, the figure´s immersed extremities, cut the golden magma that moves in a gentle current. If not, the liquid would seem totally still. The eyes reflect the light.
