Edward G N Mcnaught-davis

About the Artist

Edward McNaught-Davis prefers to paint/illustrate scenes depicting escapism and freedom but with a sense of contemporary responsibility. The common denominator among all of Edward's pictures is the vivid sense of colour used to enhance a scene. Edward strives to achieve the right balance of colour to make the picture come alive so that the viewer feels part of it.

Edward McNaught-Davis is inspired to do many of his paintings and it is quite common these days for faces and illustrations of people and animals to appear in his work that he has not consciously put there. These additional inspirations are of subtle quality and blend in well with the composition. Once you have spotted them it is difficult not to see them again.

Magpie

2006
Acrylic on Canvas
50.5 x 40.5

This was an experiment to emulate a "magic eye" theme working with nature in an abstract sense. You may be able to see three hidden sheep and a shephered as well as other figures. I've entitled the work as "Magpie" because a real life Magpie bird sat on my studio's window-sill admiring this painting for quite a few minutes. The bird seemed to be oblivious to my presence at the time.

Bluebell Walk

2004
Watercolour on Paper
39.7 x 26.8

Bluebell Walk at Llanilar has a slight abstract art appeal and is situated in-land but close to Aberystwyth on the West Wales coast. Although it is off the beaten track it is frequented by tourists and by local people as there is much beauty to experience. This abstract painting was completed in stages as each watercolour layer needed to be crisp dry before the next pigment layer was applied.

Totem Woods

2006
Acrylic on Canvas
50.8 x 61

Totem Woods is based on a true composition at Llanarth in West Wales. This spiritual and psychic abstract painting has a Red Indian influence as demonstrated by the strange “Totem Pole” designs on the tree barks. The intention was to produce an overall effect of abstract art but working closely with nature and blending the two definitions to complement each other.

Ice Blue Mountains

2006
Acrylic on Canvas
50.8 x 40.6

Ice Blue Mountains is an abstract painting based purely on imagination and represents a moonlit night of a fictitious mountainous region. Many layers of thin acrylic paint were applied to achieve its luminosity. Only blue and white paint were used. Long handled brushes were used by holding the brush right at its other end which added to the dexterity of the individual strokes and afforded more control.

Inverted Lights

2005
Acrylic on Canvas
50.8 x 61

Inverted Lights is an abstract painting of Llanilar in Mid Wales which represents a transposition of colour by considering light reversal similar to a photograph negative. Although the painting could be misconstrued as a snow scene, the colours are those shown on a photo negative with some artistic manipulation. At the time of painting Edward experienced much spiritual and psychic interference as many hidden faces of animals and people began to appear which he did not consciously put there. You can see either the abstract face of a Neolithic man on the left of the picture.

Great Bedwyn

1994
Oil Pastel on Card
29.7 x 21

Great Bedwyn is situated between Hungerford in West Berkshire and Marlborough in Wiltshire. The artist used to live near to this scene.

Hafan-y-Coed

2002
Oil Pastel on Card
30 x 21.4

This painting shows a field full of buttercups with an old farm track running parallel to it. The scene is located in the Brecon Beacons National Park behind a spiritual research centre.

Renaissance Sunset

1996
Oil Pastel on Card
24 x 16

This is truly an inspirational picture of an amazing sunset over the Irish Sea. If you look closely you will see many faces within the sky.
