ARTIST’S STATEMENT
Chris Twomey
The post-human future is here. What kind of post-humans shall we be?
Our origins, our self-identity, and the ramifications of genetic discoveries are the themes that drive the imagery of my work.
In this work, the digitization of the image and manipulation of visual data becomes a metaphor for our new ability to manage, control, and change our genomic data.

Madonna Series: Haplogroup B
2005-06 mixed media (8 in series) 40" x 30" |
|
The 8 – 10 paintings, prints, and DVD of the MADONNA SERIES, 2005 – 2006, are modeled after the classical religious paintings of the Renaissance. Using photographs of a diverse group of contemporary mothers/children, these depictions borrow the iconography of a belief system, and re-contextualize this belief system in light of recent genomic discoveries.
In the background of each painting is a phylogenetic map showing the child’s (imagined) haplogroup origins as traced by the mothers Mitochondria DNA mutations.
Haplogroups formed as our species evolved and traveled throughout the earth in groups; our particular tribe developing their own identifying mutations over time.
In each painting, I have notated the mutations which put the particular Madonna and child in their haplogroup, giving them an identity in context to the whole of humanity.
Seeing ourselves through the numbers that trace history through our DNA conjures up profound meditations about our shared origins, as well as offers a new paradigm for the idea of mortality and self. |

Madonna Series: B
2006 limited ed. ultrachrome ink on archival paper 12" 12" / variable |
|
The MADONNA SERIES is based on the iconography of the Renaissance, using my photographs of contemporary working mothers and children to spawn the various segments of the series.
The 8 prints in the suite are entitled, “Haplogroup A, B, to X” and refer to the ancestral origins of each woman/child as seen through her mtDNA. Each haplogroup developed over time as our particular tribe traveled through the earth, all of us branching off and sharing our origins in DNA.
The ephemeral nature of our physical time on earth is captured in these prints; while the genetic tracings to our past suggest a kind of immortality through the continuity of our DNA.

Triumph of the XX: XX & XYk DETAIL
2008 mixed media on aluminum foil 43 x 33 cm |
|
“Triumph of the XX” evokes the power of the XX chromosome (female) in its ability to heal a flaw or mutation in the DNA by recombining and backing up since there are two X’s. A red haired woman is the metaphor for this concept, as she recombines the genes of the world, healing division. Aluminum foil, a simple substrate found in the kitchen and commonly used by women for domestic labor, is elevated, along with this concept, to an articulation of the divine.
The photographs for this series were shot in the studio, manipulated, retouched, and printed by the artist.
