David Graham

About the Artist

My artwork is a combination of cartoon-like drawing, animation and sculpture. My drawings are the nucleus of my work; I bring them to life using 2D animation and allow them to live in a 3D world by creating little sculptures. The three media interact in a humorous fusion such as sculptural figures sabotaging my drawings. I work in small scale, encouraging a fast and spontaneous process and creating unexpected results. The absurdity of life is a loose theme that runs through all that I do. I treat serious subject matter, such as life and death, in a light-hearted fashion and give a little more weight, sympathy and emphasis to issues many consider mundane. Although I do not make bold statements prophesizing a certain philosophy, my work can be read on many levels, and I often react to societal and political absurdities. I am happy if you laugh and enjoy my art simply for the humour, but it pleases me equally if you see something a little bit deeper in my work. Above all, I am interested in creating a little world that is not too dissimilar to the one we live in; making the viewers laugh and see their everyday life in a new light.

INFLUENCES

Artists I admire include Charles Bragg, David Shrigley, John Glashan, Saul Steinberg and members of The Royal Art Lodge. In regards to film, I enjoy the experimental animations of Caroline Leaf and Norman McLaren. Aside from artists, I am interested in the strange comic talent of Andy Kaufman and Peter Sellers and love reading about pioneers of film and television.
