Simon Taylor

About the Artist

Using various mediums including photography and painting, the work is part of a continuing project started in 1993 based around ideas of perception, questioning the validity and source of received visual information.

Manchester based artist who has exhibited extensivley throughout the Uk and in Europe. His work has been purchased by many private purchasers and galleries for their perminant collections.

Using various mediums, including photography and painting, the work is part of a continuing project started in 1993 based around ideas of perception; questioning the validity and source of received visual information.

My latest collection of work is a series of paintings tiled Memory Stills. The title 'Memory Still' is used as these images are indeed derived from film stills. They are painted traditionally onto canvas producing images like a bad/blurred photograph reminiscent of a memory that is, without detail but still recognisable.

Film stars have become contemporary icons in a similar way to religious icons of the past. Their films tell the viewer a story and in turn comment upon and shape our society's morals in a similar way to religious paintings. The processes of blurring and painting the subject transforms a once celluloid image into the language of paint, creating a final mnemonic image that comments on our modern visual history and society but has reference to the effects of religious iconography.

Prices start at approx. £150 for a Limited Edition Print and go up to approx. £2,500 for a 220cm x 100cm acrylic on canvas painting.

A series of Limited Edition Prints have been created from the original image and these will be given to some of the guests who stay at the hotel.

Film Panorama - The Conversation
Figures or scenes are edited so characters and situations happen at different times; characters interact with others from previous or future stills from different points in the original movie. Manipulation of film time and re appropriation of the scene creates a false environment never directed, edited or filmed, offering a second view and narrative directed, edited and painted by the artist. Thus creating another level and word mediated by the artist/director when it is transferred from a film image to a painting. The artist becomes the director editing the film image creating narratives that exist only on the painted surface, the painting becoming the world that the viewer sees and can relate to on different levels depending on their experiences within their own outside world or previous experiences.
