Stephen Mead

About the Artist

As an artist I have been heavily influenced by both surrealism and expressionism. I can not seem to create works which I do not not have an emotional relationship with, and have no interest in making art otherwise. In the early 1990's I was published in several little literary magazines, but stopped to pursue visual work. It was around the year 2000 that I began seeking publication again, in addition to looking for venues in which to show art. Thankfully, via the web, both my writing and artwork have been showcased internationally. What a great way to connect with others without frightening them should I not feel like combing my hair!

Pandora Oceana

2006
16 x 20

From a series begun in 2001, "Our Book Of Common Faith", this piece is a mediation on myth and history.

Bespeak

2002
18 x 24

Part of a series entitled "From The Sea Of Myths", this piece is an exploration of the annunciation story.

Hands Come Forth

2001
8 x 12

From the series "Washing The Body", this glaze acrylic piece on canvas pertains both to my time spent in health care as a direct care giver, and also to what is sacred about the soul amid the flesh.

War, An Allegory

1990
22 x 28

A mixture of watercolor pencil and other mediums on canvas, this piece was done as a reaction during the first Desert Storm, as a prayer for peace.

Jesus Laughing

1996
18 x 24

Based on the lines: "Have you ever seen a picture of Jesus laughing? Do you think he had a beautiful smile? A smile that heals?" by Kate Bush, this piece is an exploration of compassion incorporating the background of Da Vinci's Last Supper.

Where Time Goes

1991
28 x 32

Symbolic in nature for the pathways of life lit by a flashlight in a guiding figure's hand, this pastel/oil work was later incorporated into my series "Blue Heart Diary".

Resurrection From Wounded Knee

2003
18 x 24

Part of the series "We Are More Than Our Wounds", this painting on paper is about recovering strength as a legacy to celebrate, despite genocide.

Song Of Ganesh

2004-2005
18 x 24

Part of the ongoing series, "Our Book of Common Faith", this piece continues the exploring religion as a bridge and source of healing, as opposed to a zealot's obsitinate cry for war.
