Christiaan Nagel

About the Artist

“I spray framed hardboards with car paint/airbrush, which gives my canvasses a very glossy modern finish. (I am trying to move away from the conventional idea of a material canvas which has a grainy rough texture).
From here I drip oil based super enamel on these canvasses to create my images. This leaves for very modern looking, blocked framed paintings consisting of only primary colours. My works have definitely become more figurative as I lately started “moving” the dripped paint around with the back of a brush. See “The Mourning Palace”; this is a good example of the characters, (the little devils pulling down the virtuous) or figures I am currently bringing into my work. With most of my first abstract paintings, painting happened impulsively. Now I develop ideas in my head before I paint. My works will always retain its abstraction and symbolism, reminiscent of the modern abstract movement, but it is becoming more intricate and detailed.
It is important to see my work in life, so one can touch and obtain the real effect of the glossy enamel finish and appearance.

Voices From The Cauldron SOLD

2007
120/120

This year i've started focussing on working more figuratively, creating ideas on paper and in my head before i paint. This is reminiscent of the Surrealist movement, which involves subconcious ideas and dreams.

Of Tall Trees and Vanity

2007
car paint and oil
120/120cm

This is an aphorism for the rich getting richer and the poor(blue lemmings) getting poorer. The red spikes symbolize the corruption associated with power as well as risilience.

Mad Wood

2007
car paint and oil
40/60cm

This piece was done for a exhibition held yearly in Durban/South Africa called "BIG WOOD". My version of a forrest critter.

Red Hot Knowledge

2007
120/120cm

This is my personal favorite. The finnish is perfect and the image accurate and symbolic.

Flower Bee

2006
120/80cm

The Moon Servant SOLD

2005
car paint and oil
120/60cm

The Moon Servant SOLD
My earlier, more abstract work.. This painting has a mystic/fantasy like character to it. A creature staring, worshiping the moon.

The Mourning Palace SOLD

2007
Car paint/airbrush and oil
120/120cm

The Mourning Palace is a synonym for temptation. It is based on Moral Dualism, which is the belief of coexistence or conflict between the "benevolent" and "malignant"/good and evil. The piece like most of my work is inspired by music, and in this case, the song; "The Mourning Palace." Music creates mental images for me which i sketch and conceptualise before i do the painting.

Porcupine SOLD

2008
Car paint/airbrush and oil
20/20cm

Porcupine SOLD

Never Ending Reach SOLD

May 2008
Airbrush and oil
120/60cm

Never Ending Reach SOLD
This is about ambition. This is my moto in life. Always reach further. Further yourself. I suppose it's what differenciates the great from the avarage.

Beatle Mania

2008
Airbrushed Canvas(car paint) and oil image
120/60cm

Beatle Mania

An example of my airbrushed canvasses.

lacquer, 2k (car paint)

UK Entrance

2008
car paint and oil
40/40cm

I originally from South Africa and am now living in London perusing a career in art. But i now need to apply for a visa to be able to extend my stay here in the UK. It's a bit frustrating but understandable. The figure on the right is me waving at England on the left. "Hello can i play with?..hello!!" Note the pale appearance of the English and me as part of a "rainbow nation"/South Africa.

One Man Ship

2008
car paint and oil
60/60cm

One Man Ship
If you want someting done you've got to do it yourself. Such is the business of arts. Such is my character, i'm out to get it!..and nothings gonna stop me.

Long Blue Arms

2008

20/20cm

Melcolm Cressey As We Know Him SOLD

2007
car paint and oil
60/60cm

This was a commissioned piece. I was asked to paint the buyers character, as we had become friend and social. Character.....? So this is what i came up with: -A caring loving family man -A business man -A creative person -A londoner walking his own path, following his own head, not taking shit from anyone. See if you can see them

The Defence of Naaitsirhc

2008
car paint and oil
100/100cm

The Defence of Naaitsirhc
A couple of months ago I got some shocking news. An old school friend of mine got involved in some religious sect and her, her brother and fiancé brutally murdered her parents. This is an intelligent, talented girl. This disturbed me immensely as she was a close friend of mine. I've been trying to make sense of it ever since; was this some sort of psychosis or religious extremism. To me it seems very unnatural and inhuman to kill ones parents. Since then I've had some sleepless nights and bad dreams. The one night i dreamt that i actually met Satan face to face and that i had some binding contract with him.... This is when I created these "guardians", these Father Christmas, biker-like celestial figures fighting evil. Its strange how when your head and heart is full, painting happens very impulsively and without thinking, at least without rational thought."

Education and biography
I have been interested in art from a very young age. In 1988 I won my first art award in the SANTAM ISURANCE CHILD ART EXHIBITION.

From 1998-2000 I worked under Fiona Kirkwood, a well known multimedia artist from Scotland.

2001-2004 I attained an Honours Degree in Psychology at the University of Pretoria. I also got a certificate in Personal Financial Management through UNISA.
At varsity I experimented with various mediums and started developing my own unique style, painting with a combination of sponges and brushes. I also got involved in building electric guitars over holidays and got intrigued by the “car paint” used to spray guitars.

In 2005 I met Tamlyn Martin, Durban curator. During these months I developed the style of art you see today. In June 2005 I had my first solo exhibition at Bean Bag Bohemia, where I sold all my work.
