In 1993 my life permanently changed course while traveling in Africa. I can't say why but it was there I realized people not only communicate with others by their dress, body decorations, and behavior they also gain "a sense of self" which is equally, if not more, important.
I immediately felt compelled to begin photographing these "nonverbal messages" -- and in doing that I've been educating myself since then in ways I value far more than any formal schooling.
Before moving to New York in 2003 I lived in Los Angeles.

| About the Artist |
I believe these things:
1) Connecting with others, and oneself, defines and informs how we live as individuals as well as how culture evolves.
2) Emotion is a common-denominator language.
3) Shooting on instinct is best because it's honest. I'm drawn to what‘s sexy or obnoxious, gorgeous or ugly, or just plain weird.
4) Feeling something is the litmus test on whether to shoot or not. I connect viscerally with people I’d hate to be, or love to be. Those I envy or those who infuriate me. The ones who make me sad or jealous.
5) My work is documentary and conceptual. It’s social and political commentary.

Paris Lady
2005 Archival pigment print 94 cm x 91 cm |
|
Mystery surrounds this woman and that captivates me. On a street in Paris she stands at the threshold of a partially open door. Anxious? Obsessing? Shall I go? Or stay? "She's me forgodsakes! It's like she's been hiding or trapped the whole time I lived in there. I don't know. Maybe paralyzed." |
Dance Man
2004 Archival pigment print 162.6 cm x 83.8 cm |
|
Dancing on the street in New York city, a man exhibits himself. He demands, and gets, public attention even while he lives in a private world. |
Mayday! Mayday!
2006 Archival pigment print 223.5 cm x 83.8 cm |
|
His T-shirt reads: "I found Jesus. So can you." A "crusader" mesmerized by lovers. " It's the point of life he's obsessing about; yearning as a circumstance and possibility as an interpretation." |
Mise en scene
2006 Archival pigment print 121.9 cm x 104.1 |
|
In Venice, California a chance meeting seems to create anxiety about what happens next. "All of us, we're invention cruising the avenues." |
Liberty Street
2006 Archival pigment print 124.5 cm x 99.1 cm |
|
On a smoking break, a construction worker at the ground zero site in New York city watches blacks relaxing curbside while men in suits pass by. I think about race relations, prejudice, and economic disparity. |
Men Working
2004 Archival pigment print 83.8 cm x 104.1 cm |
|
In front of a "Men Working" sign, a Black Muslim in Savannah, GA hawks newspapers headlining "Saving The Family". |
Subway Girl
2004 Archival pigment print 88.9 cm x 81.3 cm |
|
On a subway in New York. I loved this woman's big, dark eyes staring at me ... hostile, curious, and sad simultaneously. |
Heavy Baggage
2006 Archival pigment print 109.2 cm x 104.1 cm |
|
Venice, CA. While it was astonishing to see how the man resembled the mannequin, what I thought about was the fantasies of youth one becomes burdened with in old age. "...heavy baggage haunting his future, the ingenue whose heart he can't break." |
