About the Artist

My work engages with the idea of form, materials and process. A basis for generating forms has been developed through an exploration into the properties of industrial materials where the physical associations constitute the work. Pre-determined and systematic processes are employed in the initial construction of each piece before the inherent qualities of the material and factors of gravity, tension and expansion acting on the work determine the form. I am interested in the internal relationships between materials and the idea of what is happening within the work to make the form exist. There is an emphasis on making work that involves the floor and wall space as an integral part of the work, site specificity has become very relevant to the work and allows for a more physical approach to the space. The current stage of my work has been arrived at by a means of on-going experimentation through the production of maquettes. This element of my work can be viewed as three-dimensional research, a scaled-down way of visualising ideas and testing the properties of materials. Ideas from a number of the maquettes are then appropriated into resolved works. For my fine art degree show in 2006 I presented an installation of large-scale objects that could be viewed together as a whole work as well as separate forms. The work aimed to evoke a dynamic in the space and expose the viewer to a composition that had been reached through a direct engagement with materials.
