I use oil paint to share my view of the world. Creating what others may not see, I strive to express what the people in my paintings feel. Warmth, isolation, connectedness: each is unique but shares common needs and desires. People from all backgrounds share a sidewalk or a bus stop. Some are young, some old: all are human. Our humanity connects us.
I spend many hours observing people. In good weather, I paint quickly and take reference photos so that I can finish back in the studio if necessary. During the long winter months, I work on composing larger scale paintings and making plans for the next year.
A sunny day brings me out to appreciate the variety, vitality and joy of life. The smell of hot pavement, the sound of laughter and traffic. Come share it with me. |

High Noon
2005 oil on canvas 61 x 91 cm |
|
Collection of Martin and Jennifer Lacey.
"High Noon" is from the Born by the River series of paintings. This depiction of lunch break on the Nicollet Mall in downtown Minneapolis captures the energy of a bright, busy day while creating a sense of quiet solitude. |
Mill City Morning
2005 oil on canvas 61 x 91cm |
|
Collection of Thomas and Katherine Miller.
"Mill City Morning" is the signature painting from the series Born by the River. It is featured on the cover of the book and promotional material for the traveling exhibit.
It captures the essence of first light waking up the city of Minneapolis. The view of the city shows its connection to the past through the use of the river to generate power at Saint Anthony falls. Also shown is the Stone Arch Bridge that allowed trains to deliver grain from the wheat fields of the midwest to the rest of the world. The new Gutherie Theater and expanded river road access and parks bring the use of the river (and Minneapolis) into the 21st century. ______Review:___________________________________________________________
"Born by the River: People of the Mississippi River Towns" is a series of works probing below the obvious surface of everyday reality. With these paintings, photographs and interviews, Merchant's work in its varied moods and emotional states, mirrors the unpredictable life of the upper Mississippi as it flows shifting, as it twists and cascades downward both in form and substance.
Ron Merchant joins the many distinguished artists and writers like Longfellow, Audubon, George Caleb Bingham, Seth Eastman, John Kensett and John Bonvard and makes his mark in the sands along the Mississippi.

A Sterling Crew
2005 oil on canvas 61 x 91 cm |
|
"A Sterling Crew" from the Born by the River series of paintings and photographs, highlights the people I grew to respect in the drive-up motel I stayed at in Winona, Minnesota. They each had a story and being able to stay at the motel was seen as doing alright. I learned something about perspective and it had nothing to do with drawing.

End of the Line
2005 oil on canvas 91 x 152 cm |
|
"End of the Line" is the signature painting from the 2005 "Connections" series of paintings. This series explores the many aspects of being connected. The work is open to interpretation and helps the viewer think about their place in the world in relationship to others. Some connections are time and place sensitive. Some connections are timeless. Some connections are emotional while others are physical. I hope you come away wih an understanding of your connections and thoughtful feeling of unity. It's a small world. You are connected.
This work depicts the end of the new Hiawatha light rail train line in downtown Minneapolis. The long evening shadows and the waiting engineer add to the feeling of the end of the day.
This work was featured in the Minneapolis Mayor's office and is currently on display at the Greater Minneapolis Visitors and Convention Association boardroom. |
He Walks Alone
2005 oil on canvas 91 x 152 cm |
|
Collection of Martin and Jennifer Lacey.

Done Shopping
2004 oil on canvas 152 x 122 cm |
|
"Done Shopping" is part of the Nicollet Mall Series of oils and prints.
This series looks deeper into the interaction of people to each other and their city. Looking past the ornamental culture, we see commonalities of the old and the young waiting for the bus. Personal connections are made in the markets and restaurants; or while waiting for a light to change. However, the series also shows that even surrounded by people, you can feel alone.
Most of the paintings were started outdoors on the mall and finished in the studio.
"Done Shopping" was the signature piece in the 2004 one man exhibition "In the Stream" at the Robbin Gallery.
It has won the following awards:
Best of Show, Hopkins Center for the Arts 2005 juried exhibition.
Award of Excellence, Plymouth Primavera Arts.
Honorable Mention, Bloomington Center for Arts.
Honorable Mention, March Madness Juried Show

"Green Light" was featured in the 2004 exhibition "In the Stream" at the Robbin Gallery and was awarded second place in the 93rd Annual Fine Arts Competition at the 2004 Minnesota State Fair. It was referenced in the essay "Tracing a Winding Path: Impressions of Transformation Along the Upper Mississippi" by art historian Roslye B. Ultan in the Book "Born by the River: People of the Mississippi River Towns". Limner Fine Publishing, 2006, Minneapolis, MN. |

2006 Ron Merchant, Artist
Born by the River, People of the Mississippi River Towns
Funded in part by a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, through an appropriation by the Minnesota State Legislature and a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.
About the Project:
This project strengthens the ties of Minnesotans to each other and their artist community while expanding my artistic insights and skills.
The project, "Born by the River, People of the Mississippi River Towns", is a series of oil paintings showing the connections of people to their river town and to each other. Following the Mississippi River from Itasca State Park through Minnesota, the series shows how people differ from the small towns to the larger cities while sharing many common goals and culture.
Between May and September, 2005, I visited Lake Itasca and the river towns of Jacobson, St. Cloud, Elk River, Minneapolis, St. Paul, Red Wing and Winona. I spent three days in each town and painted one view of the Mississippi and two to four scenes of local life. Taking reference photos of each town, I used these to supplement the plein air paintings and sketches. Additional paintings were completed back in my Minneapolis studio. The result is 36 paintings, over 60 photographs and 26 first-person interviews unveiling the lives of people living by the river.
The completed work premiered at the Robbin Gallery in Robbinsdale, Minnesota and ran from May 3 through 27, 2006.

About the Artist:
This project is a major step in my career. This grant gave me the time and resources to focus on the fulfillment of my vision: a vision to understand and document our Minnesota culture through it's people. I want to be able to convey the feelings behind our cities and towns. More than just the buildings and landmarks, each town is really a sum of it's people.
I started working on this vision in 2003 with a series of paintings done on the Nicollet Mall. With the skills I learned on the Mall, I was ready to take on this larger project.
I started to teach myself to paint in 2001. After many "how-to" books, community ed classes and workshops, I went fulltime and am teaching others and working on my own visions now.
This new project expanded the scope, size and impact of my work. It allowed me to connect to and understand more of Minnesota. And, because most of the painting was done onsite, it will allowed more Minnesotans to connect to the arts. For example, during an average day painting on the Nicollet Mall over two hundred people would see me painting and 25 would stop to talk. This helped me develop an understanding of the people and place.
I connected to each local community, not only while painting, but also after the project was completed. Bringing the exhibit back to the towns involved is helping each person understand their community and the other people on the river better. They are also gaining an understanding of the artist community through first hand contact with an artist.
This project raised my visibility across the Minnesota artist community. I hope that what I learn from this project will prepare me for an expanded study of the people of the entire Mississippi River.
The major one-man shows, "Faces and Places" (2003) and "In the Stream" (2004) were both very successful and well received. The show, “Connections” (2005) was also very successful and selections from it were on display at Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak’s offices through June 30, 2005. One of the pieces from that show, "Nicollet Mall Market" was acquired by the City for it's permanent collection.
Impact on Minnesota:
This project reaches out to people all across Minnesota. By having an artist visible in their community, they gain an understanding of the artistic process. Through personal conversations with the artist, they create a permanent connection to the Minnesota artist community. They gain an appreciation for the arts and Minnesota's creative community gains an appreciative audience and support.
