Path

2002
oil

The Path - In the fall of 2002, I went with sculptor Rollie Grandbois to visit stone carver Dennis Christy in Rosebush, Michigan. While there we took a weekend trip to northern Michigan to see the changing colors of the leaves on the trees. When we stopped for a rest I found this narrow dirt road near a pond. I was reminded fondly of a place where I played when I was a child growing up in Alliance, Ohio.

Sandias

1997
oil

The Sandias - In September of 1997 my long time friend and painting instructor, Les Hawks and I were on a "photo hunt" looking for something to paint. We went to Romero Rd. and the Rio Grande in Corrales , New Mexico and found this composition. I was looking for a sunset view of the Sandia Mountains in New Mexico to use one of my favorite color combinations, blue and yellow. The first few painting sketches had the Rio Grande in them. After I painted this version, I cut the bottom third off the canvas. I liked it better that way

San Jaun

The painting is of the San Juan River Quality Waters at "Cottonwood Campgrounds" in northwestern New Mexico. The river is world-renowned for the best year-round fly fishing. I went there last October with my friend, Barry Hughes, an advertising executive from Oklahoma. We choose the exact time of year when the cottonwood trees change color from green to yellow. There is a very narrow margin of time, about two or three days, when the trees have a fresh bright yellow appearance. I have been trying for years to capture this on canvas

Zia Reservation

2003
oil

Zia Reservation - This beautiful white mesa is on the Zia Indian Reservation just north of San Ysidro , New Mexico , looking south while on old State Route 44, now called State Route 550. In September of 2003, my artist girlfriend, Rebecca Lowe, and I were just driving around one afternoon, not doing anything in particular. We were sightseeing and talking when we spotted this majestic and magnificent mesa. I had to paint it

San Ysidro

1998
Pastels

San Ysidro Arroyo - In 1998, Les Hawks and I found this arroyo just north of San Ysidro on State Route 550 about mile marker 31. Les and I both painted this scene on site. Then refined it in the studio. I later did it as a pastel for the New Mexico 2001 Distinguished Artist Calendar project. I liked it for what the light did inside the arroyo. The white path in the arroyo is calcium carbonate.

Church in Golden, NM

1998
Pastels

The Church at Golden, NM - Gordon Van Wert, a Red Lake Chippewa stone carver and dear friend of mine and I were driving around the east side of the Sandia Mountains looking for scenes for me to paint, in September of 1998. We found this church near the Ortiz Mountains in Golden, NM. I thought it was humble and beautiful. The building had a white stucco surface at the time. This was the first serious work in pastels I ever did.

Bluff Near Prewitt, NM

Pastels

Done in pastels this is one of 12 art works for the New Mexico Magazine Distinguished Artist 2001 Calendar. Bluff near Prewitt, New Mexico. This is one of many that have been made into prints and giclees. They can be ordered on the web site at www.robertbenjamin.com.

Cat Mesa, NM

2004
oil on canvas

Cat Mesa is at Jemez Springs, New Mexico. My friend Rollie Grandbois, a Turtle Mountain Chippewa stone carver has his studio and gallery at this view. This is his backyard, so to speak. The reference photograph was taken in March of 2004, when my artist daughter Ashley and my photographer daughter Dana, were visiting Presley La Fountain and Gordon Van Wert at Rollie's studio. I was impressed with the cold clear cloudless afternoon and the reflected light on the snow. In August of 2005, part of the face of this canyon wall fell. It looks different today; illustrating the earth truly is a living changing being.

Robert Benjamin, New Mexico resident since 1971, was born August, 1951, in Martin's Ferry, Ohio . Bob spent his formative years in northeastern Ohio, receiving encouragement and strong interest in the visual arts at an early age from his mother, executing his first oil painting at the age of ten.

Bob won several state and national awards for commercial design while still in high school, including a journalism award for editorial cartooning from Kent State University. Upon graduation from Alliance High School he was accepted by the Ivy School of Professional Art, Pittsburgh. After several years of study, during while Bob availed himself of the many cultural amenities of Pittsburgh, he began to visualize a more expansive natural setting as inspiration for his fine art. At this juncture he began to take a serious look at the southwest.

Arriving in New Mexico in fall of 1971, Bob worked as a graphic designer and illustrator, continuing to develop his stylistic approach. He worked briefly in a frame shop, receiving framing services in lieu of pay. In 1976, Bob began working under the direction of Master Printer, Ben Adams, at Western Graphics Lithography Studio. He assisted many notable artists in preparing their drawings for printing. At this same time, he printed a number of his own lithographs, selling entire editions of contemporary southwestern hand-pulled original prints to a national distributor, American Designs, Ltd. Bob's fine art prints sold widely throughout the United States to institutions and private collectors alike.

Many of Bob Benjamin's lithographs are in the permanent collections of museums. A national traveling exhibit, "Lithography in New Mexico", curated by the Museum of New Mexico featured one of his prints. The New Mexico Museum of Fine Arts, Santa Fe; the Roswell, New Mexico, Museum and Art Center; and the Navajo Tribal Museum, Window Rock, Arizona; have Bob's lithographs in their permanent collections. He is represented in the collections of the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport; the University of New Mexico Medical Center Cancer Research and Treatment Facility, Albuquerque ; the Smithsonian Institution National Collection of Fine Arts, Washington D.C. ; The Museum of Natural History, Albuquerque ; and other public and private collections.

Although benefiting while employed by Western Graphics from contact with such artist luminaries as Charles Lovato, Jerry Ingram, R.C. Gorman, Travis Whitfield, Russell Hamilton, Earl Biss and others, Bob became restless to broaden his creative horizons. He began studying another form of multiple originals: bronze sculpture. Again he sought guidance from the experts, studying casting techniques with art/caster A.J. Keith and art foundry director Tommy Hicks, of Shidoni Foundry, Santa Fe. In January 1980, Bob and a partner opened Southwest Bronze, a sculpture foundry and artist contract studio, in downtown Albuquerque.

Many artists published sculpture editions under Bob's guidance. He also taught bronze sculpture casting and mold-making techniques. He was known for generously sharing information and for his knowledge as an art publisher.

Ever restless to gain new experience and knowledge, Bob began studying steel sculpture fabrication at the University of New Mexico with sculptor, David Anderson. After making the determination that Southwest Bronze had fulfilled its mission, in 1986, he found himself involved in many design projects. He designed children's wear for an international market, was an art director for several Albuquerque advertising agencies, and in 1992, attended computer classes at the University of New Mexico to further hone his illustration and design skills. At this time, he also designed silver jewelry still in production and garnered several commercial art awards. In 1995, Bob turned to landscape painting full-time, working with impressionist landscaper painter, Les Hawks. He traveled the entire state of New Mexico for artistic inspiration from the beauty of its land forms and the excitement of its dramatic lighting. In 1998, New Mexico Magazine invited Bob to be the published 2001 Distinguished Calendar Artist for their millennium issue. His expression and artistic vision of the innate beauty of the New Mexico landscape continues to be celebrated.

Today, Robert Benjamin lives in Albuquerque and continues to paint southwestern landscapes and design various art forms.
