Yury Toroptsov

About the Artist

Yury Toroptsov left his native Russia in 1998 to study in New York on a prestigious scholarship. In 2003 Toroptsov, a consultant to the United Nations, decided to change his profession and follow his long-time passion - photography.

His photographs tell individual and collective stories of people by posing universal questions concerning contemporary society, and by exploring questions of identity and the permanence of myths.

In 2008 he was given a solo show at the Maison Europeenne de la Photographie in Paris. His series, "The House of Baba Yaga" (2008) was shown at Paris Photo in 2008. In 2009 Yury was invited to exhibit at The Rencontres d'Arles. His work has been exhibited in various group shows in Paris where he now lives.

"A sleeping man holds in a circle around him the thread of the hours, the order of years and of worlds. He consults them instinctively upon awaking and in one second reads in them the point of the earth that he occupies, the time past before his awakening; but their ranks can be mingled or broken. By the morning after a moment of insomnia, the sleep catches him while reading, in the position different from his usual sleeping one, it's sufficient if his raised hand blocks and moves away the sun, in the first minute of his arousal he will not know what time it is anymore, and will think that he just fell asleep. Marcel Proust "In Search of Lost Time". A series of 7 color photos. First shown at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris, France (16 Jan - 30 March 2008)

Marilyn and I

Photography

“Marilyn and I” is a work in progress photographic exploration of the theme of profane and sacred. It is a series of portraits of admirers of Marilyn Monroe. Men and women of all ages coming from all walks of life but who share an emotional attachment to Marilyn are invited to pose next to a relic, an authentic summer dress from the personal wardrobe of Monroe. With “Marilyn and I” the photographer tries to capture the elusive moment when the real meets the imaginary because most of his models never knew Monroe personally and for them she only exists in movies, books and most importantly in their imagination. [Presented at Les Rencontres d'Arles in 2009]
