Jairo And Nicola

About the Artist

Jairo and Nicola create imagery together through the mediums of print and three dimensional art. Combining the appearance of the sculptural and the two dimensional surface of the printed image. Observing the archaic qualities of neglected posters and derelict buildings where a sense of age and history has left it's mark, they have assembled an ongoing exploration into themes that include old propaganda and billboard posters, typography, symbolism and German Expressionist Cinema. As old posters decay and the original meanings become irrelevant, they transfigure into something more suggestive. With the use of a blowtorch, acrylics, screenprinting and digital facilities, Jairo and Nicola seek to push this process further. From found objects (wood, scrap metal and old victorian doors) to site specific installation and interactive performance, they have embarked on work where layers reveal layers and a sense of age, time and texture are clearly present.

Installation and performance. The evolution of a project which began at St. Pancras Church Crypt in 2006. The piece consists of two layers of fragmented text. The inner layer from The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman and the external layer from Diary of A Madman by Gogol. The dancer in these images is Katsura Isobe and the photographs from this event were taken by Gigi Giannella.

Installation and performance. The original collaboration took place at St. Pancras Church Crypt in 2006, which was based on the short story The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. For this current piece, another story The Diary of a Madman by Nikolai Gogol was also used as a source. Both of these stories deal with alternate realities in the form of a journal like format narrated by the central character who fluctuates between the conscious and the unconscious. Jairo and Nicola have created an installation of fragmented text arranged into two layers. The inner layer consists of The Yellow Wallpaper and the external layer displays text from The Diary of a Madman. Katsura’s performance is a structured improvisation in the environment created by Jairo and Nicola. Alternatively, it could be said that the environment is the reflection of her inner world. She maintains her subjective existence, using her own language, with no matter how time passes and circumstances change. Performer - Katsura Isobe. Photo - Gigi Giannella
