James Bloomfield

About the Artist

My paintings are a representation of the world around me. Recently I have been besieged with photographic images promoting lifestyles that don't exist. The high gloss world of fashion photography seems to be the leader in this field, providing ideals for the masses that can never be attained. The harsh dynamic of real life always please me more, especially when in stark contrast to this fake existence. My aim is to represent what is real.

Salford 1
A series of paintings inspired by the marks and messages of Salfords urban landscape. These paintings have a language of their own from the colour used to the expression of the mark. Each scratch or splash of paint tells a story about the physical environment and the people in it.

They have the power to influence our moods or feelings they can bring us home or act as territorial warnings. These marks become part of our immediate surroundings and enter into our daily experience. They illustrate the passage of time and the history of place. These paintings aim to capture the essence of place and hopefully act as a document to time.

Laundry St

Laundry St
East Manchester and Salford are currently going through a phase of intense regeneration. This can lead to a feeling of isolation within local communities, as their immediate habitat begins to change rapidly. Focusing my attention on railway bridges, mills and areas of light industry, these often overlooked areas are entwined with the lives of many of the residents in these disappearing communities. “By working from these specific locations and painting in situ I hope to get a feeling for a place or even just a glimpse of life here before it changes forever”.

Inspired by the landscape paintings of old, these paintings aim to capture the mood and time of a particular journey. From dawn till dusk and through various stretches of England’s motorway network. The imagery that flies past us at speed is overlooked but becomes part of our subconscious. “Through experimentation with materials and an instictive approach, I wanted to grab images from inside, watching them form in front of me letting the paint dictate the direction of each painting”.

East Lancs rd Irlam

East Lancs rd Irlam
The East Lancs Road is a solitary piece of concrete the sheer ugliness never fails to impress me.
